In the terrible years of the “Ežovščina” (period of Ežov) I spent seventeen months waiting in line, at Kresty, the prison of Leningrad. One day a man “recognized” me. Then a woman with lips blue, who stood behind me, and who certainly had never heard my name, awoke from the torpor to us all and asked me in the ear
( there, everyone spoke in whispers ) :

– But you can describe all of this?
And I said:
– I can.

Then a sort of smile slid to what had once been his face.
